Create Voice Apps From a Point-and-Click Interface with QuickFuse [09AUG10]

Amplifyd from www.readwriteweb.com

QuickFuse enables non-technical users to create voice applications from their web browsers. The apps created can range from simple call routing to complex back-end integration and voice recognition. QuickFuse includes a basic database for using business data in voice applications, but can also use external databases.

Plum Voice cites the following example use-cases:

  • Virtual receptionists
  • Notification systems
  • Order-taking hotlines
  • Automated surveys
  • Bill pay systems

Enabling non-technical users to create apps and solve problems through simple point-and-click development is an emerging trend in enterprises - KickApps and JackBe, for example, are offering ways of building web and desktop apps through simple interfaces. Giving non-technical staff the ability to manage voice systems, instead adding more work to overburdened IT staff, is a logical extension of this trend.

Seven Useful Ways to Search Twitter

The ability to filter out those tweets which don't contain a link may prove rather useful.

Amplifyd from www.openforum.com
7 Insanely Useful Ways to Search Twitter for Marketing
As a marketing tool Twitter gets much more interesting and useful when you can filter out 99% of the junk that doesn’t apply to your objectives and focus on the stuff that matters.
The basic search.twitter.com functionality is fine for searching things that are being said about your search terms. The advanced search function offers more ways to slice and dice the stream, but still leaves some room for improvement as it only searches what’s being said and where.
Now that the search engines are all pretty geeked up over real time search you can create some very powerful searches and alerts combining Google and Twitter.
Some of the best information shared on Twitter comes in the form of shared links.

Five Change Management Errors that Make You Wish You’d Read this Article Sooner - Lean #in

But surely the first question is "Is Lean right for this situation?"

Amplifyd from www.gembapantarei.com

Harvard Professor and author John Kotter revealed through his research that nearly one-third of change efforts that organizations undertake fail. Bain Consultancy has cited in a 2005 study that only 5% of companies are satisfied with their lean implementations. A majority of questions and comments on this blog are on the theme of "Help, lean isn't working!" I like to say that lean only fails when you stop trying, but the fact is that lean can fail even before you really get started. I wish that someone had passed me an article like this one back when I was making these and other change management errors.

One of the chief benefits of a proper stakeholder map is the identification of well-intentioned people who may appear to be blocking or resisting when they are in fact only defending something that is a personal or company priority and is under threat by the change.
A proper communication strategy allows you to align purpose with the maximum number of people.Read more at www.gembapantarei.com

How LinkedIn Can Benefit Your Business

As far as company news is concerned, LinkedIn allows for a link to a blog feed that can be used to publish blog articles about your business. Those blog articles will appear as News in the business profile.

Update your LinkedIn page every time a new hire starts or some other change is made in your company. Your clients will appreciate that you are keeping them in the loop, kind of like an outsider being privy to information about your company.

Blog Link automatically draws in the most current blog posts from around your network so that you can be kept up to date by sources that you deem credible. Another important feature of Blog Link is that it enhances your LinkedIn profile with the latest news from your blog. As soon as you update your blog, your business connections can read your latest thoughts.

Nanocontent: Initial Text for Links and Headings

Thanks to @thinklikeauser

Amplifyd from www.useit.com

First 2 Words: A Signal for the Scanning Eye

Summary:
Testing how well people understand a link's first 11 characters shows whether sites write for users, who typically scan rather than read lists of items.

Our newest usability study — in preparation for the new Writing for the Web 2 course — tests how well users understand the first 11 characters of a website's links and headlines. For example, we'd represent this article by the "First 2 Wor" string. (Note how the guideline to show numbers as numerals lets me squeeze more meaning into this tiny stump of text.)

Users typically see about 2 words for most list items; they'll see a little more if the lead words are short, and only the first word if they're long.

The full text of these short items is microcontent, so this study targeted nano-content. Similar principles apply to both links and headings, but we tested a set of links — again for uniformity.

Does Your Site Communicate Its Purpose Clearly?

From Collette

Amplifyd from www.thinklikeauser.com

Jakob Nielsen, a leading web usability consultant, says the three main questions that a user must find answers to in the first thirty seconds of viewing a site are:

  1. Who are you?
  2. What do you do?
  3. What should I (the user) do next?

If these questions are not satisfactorily answered in thirty seconds or less, a website rethink should be done pronto.

Your site needs to shout out the site name, what the site is for and what the user should do first.

Users generally don’t linger on the homepage. They want to go to the product descriptions, the entertainment, service or how to contact the site owner. A broad target audience will have different requirements. Address this complexity with calls to action such as: Contact Us for a Free Evaluation, so that each customer is handled personally. A good designer should be adept in attracting the user’s eyes to your calls-to-action.

What are Virgin Media and Google doing for email?

NTLWorld and Blueyonder email addresses are being moved to the Google mail system

Amplifyd from www.virginmedia.com

Virgin Media and Google are working together to create brand new email services for Virgin Media customers, based on the Google Apps platform. That means our customers will get much larger mailboxes (7000MB compared to the current 30MB!), a fantastic new webmail interface, and better email search features.

Once we launch the service for new customers, we’ll start moving existing customers to the Google platform. Since we’ve got millions of mailboxes to move, this will take some time, but we’ll keep you updated on our progress.

We’ll be giving you lots more detail closer to launch time - don’t worry! For the moment, we can tell you that the service will look similar to Google Mail, so if you’re familiar with their webmail service, you’ll know it’s simple, easy to use, and looks great.
